  • Natural resource appraisal
  • Environment education and community sensitisation
  • Climate risk screening for projects
  • Monitoring of environmental commitments

What you are left holding

  • Screening note and terms of reference
  • Baseline and assessment report
  • Environmental and social management plan
  • Consultation and monitoring records

The work in detail

Climate change adaptation work covers adaptation and mitigation planning, environmental and social impact assessment, natural resource appraisal, climate risk screening and environment education. Clients come either because a regulator or funder requires an assessment, or because a physical risk has already begun to affect operations.

The activity is first screened against the applicable statutory and funder requirements, which establishes what level of assessment is genuinely needed. This matters, because over-scoping an assessment wastes money and under-scoping it fails approval. A baseline field survey of the receiving environment and resource base follows, with community consultation recorded rather than asserted.

Impacts are then identified, rated and traced to source, with mitigation costed rather than stated in principle, and set out in a management plan that names who does what, when and at what cost. Sensitisation sessions cover the commitments made, and periodic monitoring checks performance against the plan, which is what a regulator asks for at the next inspection.

Scenarios, for reference

An approval stalled on consultation

A project had an assessment report and thin consultation records. Documented community sessions, with issues raised and responses recorded, closed the gap the regulator had identified.

A resource base under pressure

An operation dependent on a local water source had no picture of seasonal availability. A resource appraisal quantified the constraint and put a costed adaptation measure in the management plan.

Commitments made and never monitored

An organisation had an environmental management plan nobody tracked. We converted it into a monitoring schedule with named owners and a quarterly reporting format.
